The “Bohemian Bride” has become a major trend in bridal style in recent years. From a fashion perspective, that means messy braids, earth-tone makeup, flower crowns, bare feet, bell-sleeves and lace – lots of lace.

It’s a pretty look, right? Sure, but technically, Bohemian is not a look, it’s an eccentric lifestyle from the 19 th century. Bohemian does not represent romantic, beachy, or beautiful. In fact, it’s the opposite. Let’s do a quick history lesson, shall we?

“Bohemianism” is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people who have no permanent ties. Bohemians are historically living in voluntary poverty, constantly struggling to find their next meal.

Vagabond chic? Not the look we’d recommend on your wedding day. It’s ironic that one of the most popular wedding trends is based on the anti-establishment, unorthodox values of unstable nomads from centuries ago. A real Bohemian would not have stepped foot in a traditional wedding setting.
